However, it is widely acknowledged that John Donne and other Metaphysical Poets often used unusual and unexpected comparisons between seemingly disparate objects, a technique known as "conceit". This technique sometimes resulted in strained or unnatural comparisons, but it was also seen as a way to explore complex and abstract ideas. Donne's poetry, and that of other Metaphysical Poets, can be challenging and demanding, but it is also highly regarded for its intellectual depth, wit, and originality.
