What does a conceit mean?( MEG 101 ) ( STUDY OF JOHN DONNE )

In poetry, a conceit is an extended metaphor or comparison between two unlike things that dominates or structures a poem. Unlike a simple metaphor or simile, a conceit often encompasses an entire poem and is developed through a series of related comparisons. In conceits, the poet often creates surprising, imaginative, and far-fetched connections between seemingly dissimilar things, which can be used to illustrate complex emotions, abstract concepts, or philosophical ideas. John Donne and other Metaphysical poets are famous for their use of conceits in their poetry.
